The Stone Church

A converted 1832 church turned live music venue, The Stone Church is one of New England's most unique spots to catch a show. With great beer, incredible acoustics, and a lineup that punches well above its weight, this is the beating heart of Newmarket's music scene.

"Newmarket is such a cool little mill town. Main Street has great local shops and restaurants, and the Lamprey River trail is a hidden gem. Real community feel."

Getting to know Newmarket

The little mill town that rocks

Newmarket packs more character per square foot than any small town on the Seacoast. Its granite mills - some of the finest still standing in New England - rise straight from the Lamprey River, and their revival filled Main Street with restaurants, galleries, and an easy, unpolished cool built by people who bet on this town early.

The crown jewel is The Stone Church, the hilltop music room in an 1832 meetinghouse that has been booking great bands for generations - the floors creak, the beer is cold, and the sound is somehow perfect. Our Newmarket formula: dinner on Main Street in the shadow of the mills, the walk up Zion Hill, and a show in a room where everybody seems to know somebody. Kayak the Lamprey down to Great Bay the next morning and you have done the whole town properly.

Things to do in Newmarket

  • β€Ί Catch a show at The Stone Church - the room is half the experience
  • β€Ί Dinner on Main Street in the shadow of the mills
  • β€Ί Kayak or paddleboard the Lamprey River to Great Bay
  • β€Ί Walk the riverwalk below the falls
  • β€Ί Heron-watch at the Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge nearby

Local favorites

  • The Stone Church - creaky floors, cold beer, great sound - a New England original
  • The mills from the river - Newmarket's skyline, best seen from a kayak
  • Main Street at dusk - small-town evening done exactly right

Good to know Street parking on Main fills on show nights - the municipal lot by the mills is steps away. The Lamprey boat launch is the easiest put-in on the whole Great Bay system.

The Big Bean

Worth the drive inland. Newmarket's Main Street standby bakes its own breads and bagels, the plates are big and unfussy, and the room has that small-town hum where the staff remembers regulars' orders. Pair it with a walk down to the granite mills afterward and you have done Newmarket right.

Riverworks Tavern

Newmarket's deck beside the Lamprey River, in the shadow of the old granite mills. Comfortable tavern food, an unhurried pace, and the kind of view that quietly turns one round into two. Our move: dinner here, then the walk up the hill for a show at the Stone Church.

Deciduous Brewing

A small room in a Newmarket plaza with a reputation far bigger than its footprint - pastry stouts and fruited sours that beer traders drive hours for. Release days are genuine events here: check the calendar, go early, and do not expect last week's beer to still be on.

Wed-Sun afternoons Directions Website β†—

Rockingham Country Club

Known locally as The Rock, a welcoming nine along the Lamprey River that has been teaching Seacoast golfers since 1933. Affordable, quick to play, and prettier than it has any right to be - the perfect after-work loop.

Daily from 7am Directions Website β†—

Emery Farm

Farmed since 1655, which makes it one of the oldest family farms in America, just next door in Durham. Summer berries, a cheerful market and cafΓ©, and resident goats that will end any plan to make this a quick stop. Budget the extra twenty minutes; the goats always win.

Coppal House Farm

The Lee farm behind the Seacoast's beloved sunflower festival, when acres of bloom draw photographers from all over New England for one short window in high summer. The intel that matters: buy tickets online ahead, leave the dog home (no pets on the farm), and spring for the early-morning session if photos are the mission. The corn maze brings everyone back in fall.
