Known for their legendary artisan breads, When Pigs Fly expanded into Neapolitan-style wood-fired pizza and it was a game-changer. Their Kittery Foreside location is the perfect spot for a casual family dinner with some of the best dough on the Seacoast.
"First timers! Everything was fantastic- $7 margaritas were amazing, fresh squeezed lime, just enough alcohol to know you have a cocktail and not an overpriced mocktail- Pizza is fresh, and ingredients are just amazing- but the French fries are to die for and reminded me of my Mom's from scratch recipe that was a labor of love with a triple fry and fresh potatoes 10 out of 10 definitely try them!!!! Eggplant Parmigiana sandwich was crispy, delicious on their artisan bread- Thank you for a wonderful experience definitely recommend and we will be back!"

Maine's oldest town, quietly its coolest
Kittery, incorporated in 1647, is the oldest town in Maine - shipbuilders by trade for nearly four centuries, from tall ships to the submarines of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard that still anchors the town today. I grew up in Portland, so I thought I had Maine coastal towns figured out; Kittery keeps proving there was more to learn.
Most travelers see the Route 1 outlets and keep driving. The real town is the Foreside - a few dense blocks of chef-owned restaurants, a famous bakery-café, coffee roasters, and dive-bar charm directly across the bridge from Portsmouth. We walk over for dinner and call it a night out in another state. Add Fort McClary's ramparts, quiet Seapoint at low tide, and lobster on the dock at Chauncey Creek, and Kittery might be the Seacoast's best-kept not-so-secret.

Good to know Fort Foster charges a seasonal gate fee and earns it. Foreside parking is tight on weekend evenings - the municipal lot on Wentworth Street is the move, or do what we do and walk over the bridge from Portsmouth.

Lil's Café
Kittery Foreside's living room, set in a former bank building on Wallingford Square. The glazed crullers are famous for a reason and genuinely do sell out, so treat mid-morning as a deadline, not a suggestion. Local footnote I love: the café is named for a longtime waitress at Bob's Clam Hut up the road.

Seapoint Beach
Kittery's hidden crescent - quiet, residential, and beloved by dog walkers in the off-hours. The tiny lot holds only a couple dozen cars and is resident-restricted in summer, which is precisely how it stays this peaceful. Treat it as an early-morning and shoulder-season beach and it will treat you very well.
Fort Foster Park
The do-everything park on Gerrish Island: pocket beaches, a long pier, shady trails, and postcard views of Whaleback Light. There is a seasonal gate fee and it earns every penny. Pack a picnic and treat it as a full-day park that happens to include beaches.

Chauncey Creek Lobster Pier
Picnic tables on a deck over a tidal creek, lobster hauled steps from where you sit, and a bring-your-own-everything policy - wine, sides, even a tablecloth if you want the full production. In season they ask you to keep visits to about two hours, which tells you exactly how loved it is. The platonic Maine lobster experience, ten minutes from Portsmouth.
Bob's Clam Hut
The Route 1 fried-clam benchmark since 1956. The house debate is Bob's classic style versus the tangier Lillian's, and the only correct answer is ordering both and settling it at the picnic tables. There is a line at nearly every hour - it moves, and it has never once not been worth it.
