Local Seafood, the Real Stuff

Lobster opinions, strongly held

I grew up in Portland, Maine, so I hold lobster opinions the way some people hold religious ones. The good news: the ten minutes around the Piscataqua deliver the real thing - dock decks, clam huts, and fish counters where the boats are practically visible. The rules of the genre: patience at the classics, BYO where it is allowed, and always ask what came in today.

Chauncey Creek Lobster Pier

Picnic tables on a deck over a tidal creek, lobster hauled steps from where you sit, and a bring-your-own-everything policy - wine, sides, even a tablecloth if you want the full production. In season they ask you to keep visits to about two hours, which tells you exactly how loved it is. The platonic Maine lobster experience, ten minutes from Portsmouth.

Bob's Clam Hut

The Route 1 fried-clam benchmark since 1956. The house debate is Bob's classic style versus the tangier Lillian's, and the only correct answer is ordering both and settling it at the picnic tables. There is a line at nearly every hour - it moves, and it has never once not been worth it.

Fox's Lobster House

Lobster with a front-row seat to Nubble Light, the most photographed lighthouse in Maine. Yes, it is the tourist move; no, you will regret nothing. The free Sohier Park lot is right there, so go early or at golden hour and make one stop cover both the lighthouse photos and dinner.

Petey's Summertime Seafood

The Rye Harbor institution where post-beach traffic pulls over for overstuffed lobster rolls and award-winning chowder. Grab a deck seat facing the harbor and time it right - the fishing boats come home while you eat, which is the whole show.

Sanders Fish Market

The South End counter Portsmouth trusts for tonight's dinner, run by a family with generations in the lobster business. Day-boat scallops, chowder to go, and honest answers about what is freshest - my kind of retail, five minutes from downtown.

Seaport Fish

A full-service market on the Rye/Portsmouth line where the counter staff actually know which boat your fish came off. My standing advice: walk in without a plan, ask what came in today, and build dinner around the answer. It has never steered us wrong.

Al's Seafood

A North Hampton market-and-restaurant combo where the fried platters arrive absurdly generous and the fish case sends you home with tomorrow's dinner too. Zero pretense, maximum seafood - the locals' answer to fighting the beach-strip crowds for a fried haddock plate.

Brown's Lobster Pound

An old-school pound on the Seabrook marsh where you pick your lobster from the tank and carry the tray to a picnic table over the water. It has fed generations of beachgoers and changed almost nothing in the process, which is the entire point.

The Beach Plum

Famous for lobster rolls stuffed past all reason and a homemade ice cream window that turns dinner into a two-part event. Both the North Hampton original and the Portsmouth location draw summer lines - they move quickly, and skipping the ice cream course is a rookie mistake.

Markey's Lobster Pool

The classic marsh-side lobster pool on the Seabrook side of the Hampton bridge, feeding beach traffic since 1971. Order at the counter, claim a deck table, and watch the tide slide through the marsh while you crack claws. Old-school in every right way.
