Weekend brunch in our house is a walk, not a drive - one of the perks of living in Portsmouth's West End. Seven years of working through every pastry case and hash plate taught me one rule that matters: the 9 to 11 window on summer Saturdays is peak line at every spot below, and most are first-come. Go at 8:30 or go at 1:30, and bring cash for the smallest rooms.
Yes, the line is real, and yes, I still get in it a few times a year - the retro decor and mile-high plates are the show every visitor asks about by name. The move locals know: breakfast runs all day here, so a mid-afternoon weekday visit gets you the same menu with none of the wait.
My easy Sunday: a window seat, a warm popover with strawberry butter, and Market Square waking up on the other side of the glass. It is also the rare downtown brunch you can usually walk into mid-morning without a wait, which I try not to say too loudly.
A genuine French pâtisserie in the heart of downtown. The jewel-box macarons get the photos, but the laminated croissants are what I actually walk down for. Weekend brunch here feels like a small vacation; midweek, the pastry case alone justifies the trip.
Worth the drive inland. Newmarket's Main Street standby bakes its own breads and bagels, the plates are big and unfussy, and the room has that small-town hum where the staff remembers regulars' orders. Pair it with a walk down to the granite mills afterward and you have done Newmarket right.
The family-run Route 1 landmark where three generations can order three completely different breakfasts and everyone wins. It is the pressure valve of Hampton brunch - the big dining rooms mean you can usually get a table even in July - and the bakery counter makes leaving without dessert a test of character.
The taffy machines have been pulling Goldenrod Kisses in the window since 1896, and watching them work is still the best free show in York Beach. Breakfast in the old-fashioned dining room behind them is pure time travel. Go before the beach crowd surfaces - by mid-morning in summer the sidewalk out front is a parade.
Kittery Foreside's living room, set in a former bank building on Wallingford Square. The glazed crullers are famous for a reason and genuinely do sell out, so treat mid-morning as a deadline, not a suggestion. Local footnote I love: the café is named for a longtime waitress at Bob's Clam Hut up the road.
Tucked down Penhallow Street since 1980 and still the quietest institution downtown - soups, quiche, and cakes that taste like somebody's talented grandmother is in the back. When the Congress Street lines get long on a summer Saturday, this is where I go instead.
